Ethical photo contest: 11 points to check before entering
You already invest a great deal in your photographs. Here is what makes a contest respect that investment, and what Snow Much to See does on each point, with the rules to back it up.
Before the photograph, there is everything else
Professionals or amateurs, you have given a great deal before even submitting an image: equipment, travel and journeys, time spent outdoors in the cold, then the sorting and editing. The fees of a contest come on top of all that.
A contest that respects this investment
An ethical contest charges fees proportionate to what it offers, publishes its rules before you pay, judges your images fairly and gives you real chances of being rewarded. These 11 points come from photographers' associations, major international contests and the photo press; our sources are at the bottom of the page.
The 11 points, and our responses
For each point: what to demand, what should alert you, and what our rules say.
01Your copyright remains yours
To demand
You keep your rights. The organiser requests limited authorisation: prizewinning photographs only, uses listed, duration fixed, your name credited.
Beware
"You assign all your rights", on all photographs received, with no time limit.
At Snow Much to See
No assignment. For selected photographs only, a free and non-exclusive authorisation: rankings, exhibition, catalogue, promotion of the contest and the festival, for 5 years, always with your name. Any other use, notably commercial, requires your agreement.Rules, article 11
02Your photograph is not cropped without you
To demand
The image exhibited or published is yours, as you made it.
Beware
A photograph "used as cropped by the organiser".
At Snow Much to See
Never any cropping without your agreement. A photograph of unusual proportion is printed whole, with a white margin; cropping can only be proposed to you, and you validate it.Rules, article 3
03Clear fees, no surprises
To demand
Modest fees, displayed before submission, and a possible free entry.
Beware
Fees counted category by category, which quickly add up.
At Snow Much to See
2 photos free. Then €5 up to 9 photos, €10 up to 16, €15 up to 26, €25 up to 31 with the portfolio review. A single payment for the entire entry, regardless of categories.Rules, article 7
04Real chances of being rewarded
To demand
An honest relationship between what you pay and your chances of being distinguished: a broad enough list of winners for every entry to count.
Beware
Fees for only a handful of prizes, regardless of the number of entrants.
At Snow Much to See
Regardless of the number of entrants, 1 entry in 10 is distinguished: the top 10 % receive an honourable mention and its badge, even without a prize. Added to these are 7 exhibition winners at the festival and 22 category prizes (one single image prize and one series prize in each of the 11 categories).Rules, article 3
05Printing, framing and exhibition covered
To demand
What is promised to the winner is provided to them.
Beware
The winner learns they must pay for their printing, framing, hanging or certificate.
At Snow Much to See
Fine art printing on Hahnemühle paper, mounting, American box framing and exhibition at the Images & Neige festival: we cover everything. You have nothing to print, nothing to frame, no stand to manage.Rules, article 3
06Anonymous judging
To demand
The jury judges the image, without knowing who made it.
Beware
A jury that sees names, or signed photos that betray them.
At Snow Much to See
The jury sees your photos without your name: the imagora platform is configured this way. No signature, no watermark, no logo in the image.Rules, articles 8 and 10
07A named jury, with no conflict of interest
To demand
Named jurors, who can be verified, who do not enter the contest and withdraw if they know a candidate.
Beware
"A panel of recognised professionals", without a single name.
At Snow Much to See
6 named jurors with their roles: Giandra De Castro, Frédéric Boiteux, Benoit Roux and the cultural team of the City of Cluses. Jurors, organiser and contest administrators cannot enter. A juror connected to a candidate does not judge their entry.Rules, articles 4 and 10
08Rules readable before paying
To demand
The full rules, criteria, calendar and name of the organiser, before any submission.
Beware
Rules that only appear after payment. An organiser that cannot be found.
At Snow Much to See
The full rules are on this site, in 8 languages. They give the 6 jury criteria, what the jury looks for in each of the 11 categories, and the dates of voting, deliberation and results. The organiser is named, with her address and SIRET number.Rules, articles 2, 10 and 13
09Real prizes: a real exhibition
To demand
Prizes described precisely, that can be seen.
Beware
Vague prizes, or a trophy to buy.
At Snow Much to See
The prize is a real exhibition: 7 exhibition winners at the Images & Neige festival, Cluses, 22–24 January 2027, with fine art prints produced, framed and hung by us. The winning photographs also appear in the exhibition catalogue, with the jury's written analysis.Rules, article 3
10Written feedback on the images
To demand
Knowing why a photograph was selected.
Beware
A winners' list without a word of explanation.
At Snow Much to See
Each winning image is published with the jury's written analysis. From €5, all entrants receive the PDF catalogue, with all photographs commented. From €25, the portfolio review: a written page on your submission, with the jury's top 5.Rules, article 3
11Real images
To demand
Clear rules on editing and artificial intelligence.
Beware
A contest that allows fabricated images to win.
At Snow Much to See
Standard editing accepted. Photomontages and images generated or modified by artificial intelligence rejected; in case of doubt, we request the original file. In wildlife, the jury appreciates images made without disturbing the animal.Rules, article 9
Our 1st edition, in 2025: winners' list published, with complete series and the jury's feedback. Among our winners, photographers awarded at the Sony World Photography Awards and Visa pour l'Image.
Our limits, also written down
An ethical contest also states what it does not do. Everything is already in the rules and FAQ.
- No cash prizes this year. We are seeking partners to fund future editions.
- No individual feedback on your submission below €25 in fees. From €5, you receive the commented catalogue.
- Fees are not refunded, unless the contest is cancelled.
- The exhibited prints remain with the organisation. They are only re-exhibited with your consent.
- Your travel to the festival remains at your own expense. Your presence is not required: we print, frame and exhibit your photographs.
